Summer Playlist 2014

It's finally Summer (although whilst I'm writing this the weather has decided to take a turn for the worst; the rain is making me want to go to the loo!) It's the season for sunbathing on the beach, ice creams in your back garden, dads wearing those dodgy sandle/sock combinations, and BBQs smoking out your neighbours (smoke them out like the insects they are.) However, the best thing about Summer is the music.
Every year there's a plethora (new word of the day, please tweet me it to show me you care) of new artists releasing great music, oldies releasing some smashing tunes, and artists, that should have quit years ago, struggling to tread water (Mariah needs to stop. Just stop... (okay, that's a little harsh, sorry.)) This year is exactly the same; there are so many good tracks out there already. If you're like me then you'll probably struggle to find a place to start, run helplessly to the iTunes chart to see what's going down and realise you LITERALLY HAVE NO IDEA.

Fear not my sonically-sheltered friends, I've had a brainwave (I know, it sounds terrifying.) I was walking around my town the other day listening to the same-old tracks I normally listen to when I realised that I didn't need to restrict my music world to just what fits on my iPhone. Don't get me wrong, I do have a pretty extensive collection of music, but I just can't be bothered to sync it across (I'm lazy, sue me.) What if we worked together to discover some awesome music? Well, what a swell idea, Sammy! Why don't we start a collaborative playlist on Spotify?

The playlist is at the bottom of the post - I thought I'd pick out some of the songs from it and give you a little bit of a break down.

Broods – Bridges I discovered Broods whilst writing this post and I'm over the moon. These guy are a sibling duo that deliver the most aurally-pleasing sounds I've ever heard. I can't place it, but for some reason I get a London Grammar vibe from this pair... but with a bit more 'umph!' If you take anything from this playlist, please let it be this track. Cherish it. Love it. Share it.

Sia – Clap Your Hands Sia has, for a long time (read: 7 years) been one of my favourite musical geniuses in the world/galaxy/dimension ever ever (I love her a lot.) We've got history, and half of me wishes I could keep her my little secret. Sia's smashing the pop charts the world over, but she's so far from being the 'conventional' pop star. Every single one of her songs needs to be enjoyed individually and you most definitely need to listen to them more than once. I've journey through life with Sia; at every turning point her music has spurred me on; Whether I was partying at uni, or hitting the books studying, Sia's been the best. I know, this has gotten cheesy, but I've never felt such dedication to someone I've never met. It's so strange, it's so weird... Please love her, she deserves every ounce of success that comes her way. Clap your hands, make the most of the good things, find that light in your life (forgive my essay!)

Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill There's not much to say about this track. I am going to give you some directions though: 1. wait for the sun to set get low in the sky 2. find some great company, good drinks and watch the sun set 3. achieve pure bliss.

This playlist is just the start, I want you to add to it! There are some rules: whatever song you add, I want you to comment below what it means to you, why you added it, and what makes this a kill summer track. I hope you find something new in there that you'll enjoy, I really loved making the playlist! You can follow me on Spotify if you think I've got good taste.

What are your Summer jams? Why are they important to you?
